Working with flames in Photoshop is very difficult, but in this tutorial, I will show you how to use a fire image to create burning paper. We combine the look of a beautiful black background with beautiful text to complete the image.

Follow our video tutorial on the Envato Tuts+ YouTube channel to learn how to add fire to text:
Before we burn the text, let’s create our canvas. To create a new document, press Control-N and use the following settings: 1900 x 1200 pixels; 300 dpi each.
Select the Radial Gradient mode and create a background using our gradient. Note that the gradient is horizontal, not vertical. In this image, we want the text to be on top, so the top of the image should be brighter.
As with text, once again we have background. But instead of starting from scratch, I just copied the background from the previous tutorial, merged all the layers, and ended up with what you see below.
How To Create Text Effects In Photoshop
Just to add some texture, let’s create a new layer by pressing Shift-Control-N and then fill this new layer with this brown color:
Then go to Filter > Texture > Texturizer and set the Canvas Texture to 80% Scale and Emboss to 4.
Once you have your texture layer, set the blending mode to the layer. This adds nice detail to our text, which is good because we’re working on large files for our fire letters.
Next, we’ll add a layer to slightly blur the bottom half of the image. This is because where there is a flame, the top appears to glow hotter, while the bottom is cold.

Now let’s start with text fire. Let’s add some text using the Trajan font
What we’re going to do with our text is make it appear that the top half is above the background. We want it to look like red hot paper on fire.
This means that we do some effects and apply masks to them so that only the top half is visible, while the bottom half goes back to the texture, as opposed to what we don’t have right away.
So first create a new group to place all the layers – because there are a lot of them. Then copy the text layer using Control-J and set the copied text color to it

Now let’s add a mask and draw a gradient so that the newest text disappears as shown below and below you can see the red color combination of the two columns below.
Make another duplicate of the text layer and place this layer below the group. Adjust the color
And then go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and it will ask you to rasterize the text. Click Yes and then set the Radius to about 4 pixels.
Then Control-click to go back to one of the text layers and go back to the black layer, and then click the Delete button so that you’re left with the shadow type. Then duplicate this layer and merge it with the first layer by pressing Control-E to intensify the effect. You should have something like the screenshot below.

Add another gradient mask to make the shadows disappear as shown. It looks like the text jumps off the page.
Now duplicate our black layer again and using the Smudge Tool and a soft brush, you’ll want to erase the shadow around it so it looks like burn marks.
Now it’s time to add it to the top of our list. First of all, duplicate the texture layer again and put this layer on top and use them
Use a large, soft brush and remove the area below to even it out.

Set the blending mode of the glow layer to Soft Light. You can repeat this process, remove more until the top of the fire paper is lighter.
Now fold the paper again and place it on top. This should again be the same yellow color (
Then Control-click the layer and go to Select > Modify > Contract and use a value of 1 pixel. Then click Delete to delete all but 1 pixel of the pattern.
Set the blending mode of this layer to Overlay and you should have something like the image below.

Add a layer mask to the 1 px glow layer to make it disappear below, just like we did with the other layers. Then duplicate the layer and set Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur to 1 pixel.
Then duplicate this layer again and blur it to 2 pixels. Then duplicate the layer again and blur it to 4 pixels.
Then Control-click on one of the text layers, press Control-Shift-I to deselect and go to all the highlights, and click Delete to make the text border respond.
Bright layers and combining them. Grab the Smudge Tool and run over the text and make it look like a heat stroke as shown.
The “step & Repeat” Trick For Creating 3d Text In Photoshop
Now we have finished our text. I’ve defined and printed some glow layers to make the flames more visible. Feel free to try to get a really red-hot face with this.
Next, after the last wall, I went ahead and added a quote below my main text. It gives a nice look to the page. Try to use a color that matches the background and layer of the text so it doesn’t stand out too much because we want it to be a secondary element to the main text.
I use Pt Sans as my font and set it up like the previous Grass text.
Finally, with all our preparations, it’s time to add fire to the text! For this we need some images of fire on a black and white background.
Make A Fire Text Effect In Photoshop
We need to open the flame image in Photoshop and then go to the Channels tab and then find the channel with the highest contrast, which for the fire image should be the Red Channel and click on it. This will make your image black and white, and since we’re at the highest contrast, it will appear white.
Now Control-click that channel and it will select all the pixels in that channel. Then, switch back to the RGB channel and copy the selected pixels by pressing Control-C.
And now we can easily put the flame on our main image by pressing Control-V. This is an important technique for printing something transparent like fire on a flat background.
Copy all three flames without touching the original file, then make the flames invisible.

Select the first copy of the flame and press Control-T and move and rotate and then add your first script.
Then, add the second and third copies of the flame to the script. Change it and rotate if you want.
Make more duplicates of the flame and add to each letter. Applying fire to text is as easy as moving fire. Also, feel free to extend the flame to create more clarity.
Select all the flames and then right click > Merge Layers. Then, change the Blending Mode of the flame to Screen so that all the black parts disappear and remain transparent.

Create a flame layer and then go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and set the Radius to 3 pixels.
Finally, let’s add one last important thing. Create a new layer above all and draw a white to black radial gradient as shown. Set the blending mode to the top layer and the opacity to 40%.
And here is the fire text! It’s simple and true and affects everything.
How do you create fire in Photoshop, you can play with fire (digitally, please). It’s as easy as downloading a PSD file on Fire. You can not only create letters with fire, but also many images.
