How To Create Animated Graphics In Photoshop For Engaging Content – There are many tools online that you can use to create animated GIFs these days. I find creating animated GIFs in Photoshop very useful because I can save the source file and edit it at any time. Also, it is the most versatile tool.
That said, there is a bit of a learning curve in using Photoshop. It can take hours or days to create a GIF. Stay tuned as I show you how to do this step by step in less than 10 minutes.

Static images work well, but animated GIFs are more fun and don’t take much time to create.
How To Line Up Your Layers For An Animated Gif In Photoshop
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to mix text, icons, graphics and images using Photoshop CC on a MacBook Pro.
For this campaign, I want to promote a virtual event on social media. I call this event “Asia’s Virtual Marketing Summit”. This is not an actual event, I made it up for the purpose of this guide.
Before transferring images, graphics and text to banners, the materials must first be processed.
Top tip: When drawing, be sure to look for vectors where each component is on separate layers and not placed on the background.

I went to FreePik to look for pictures related to this event. Below is the background image you want to add to your banner.
To publish this banner on Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin, create a new Photoshop document with the following specifications:
If you have a lot of images ready to convert to animated GIF, you can skip the image above and load the images in one of the following ways:
Select the desired background image. Then go to the top menu, click “Edit” and click “Copy”.

Return to your Photoshop file or document and press “Command” and “V” on your keyboard at the same time to paste the image.
Select Smart Objects to keep their original properties. If you want to know more about Smart Objects and their benefits, you can check out this article from Adobe. Click “OK”
In the case of this project, I put the event icon, status, date, and call to action in the file.
Just make sure you add them to separate Photoshop layers so that each layer can be rotated or panned at a different time. Continue creating your banner with all the graphics, text and images appearing in the Photoshop file.
The Best Way To Learn Motion Graphics
Next, it’s time to name or label each layer so you can identify them better when creating your GIF. To highlight the name, go to the Layers panel which can be found by clicking on “Windows” in the menu at the top. Then scroll down and click on “Layers”.
When the Layers panel appears, double-click on the first layer, where the words are. They will be highlighted then you can rename the layer. Do the same for the remaining levels.
Before you start moving the layers, click on “Options” and on the top menu, go down and click on “Timeline”.
Then, in the timeline window, click the small arrow pointing down. Then select “Create frame animation” from the drop-down menu.

Go to the small menu marked with three lines next to the timeline box like this:
Click the three lines and select “Create a new layer for each new frame” from the drop-down menu.
Next, go to the bottom left of the timeline panel and click the “Convert to Video timeline” icon. It looks like this:
When you click on the icon, it will appear in the timeline panel. You will see all the posts on the left

Now, all the layers will appear together and you will not see any animation when you press the play button.
Another thing to do is to have only the first picture you want to see and hide the others first.
Do this by clicking the eye icon next to the layer you want to hide in the Layers panel.
In this case, the only layer that needs to see the start of the animation is the map and background, so turn off visibility for all layers except the map and background layer.
What Is Motion Graphic And How To Make It?
What you will see now is just the map image with a yellow background layer.
Then, to add the map graphics image, click the small arrow on the image layer in the timeline. A drop-down menu will appear with three key functions: position, opacity, and style.
For this animated GIF, I wanted the animation to be invisible at first and then gradually fade away. So I will use the “Opacity” function.
Next, make sure the red vertical line in the timeline window is drawn to the “00” side of the key. This tells the software that you want the first effect to start at the beginning of the GIF animation.

Next, click the clock icon next to the word “Opacity.” You will now see a yellow diamond icon appear to the left of the clock icon only on the map layer timeline.
Then go to the Layers panel, select only the “Map” image layer and set the opacity to 0%.
Back in the timeline window, move the red vertical line to the timeline where you want the graphic image to appear. In this case, I changed the time to 02:00 f.
Then click on the diamond icon on the left. Clicking on the icon displays the diamond icon in the timeline. This means that the original opacity effect you added earlier will stop where you moved the red vertical line.

Then click the diamond icon that looks like a red vertical line in the timeline window to select the image in the key. You will see that it is selected when it turns yellow.
Now if you scroll the red vertical line on the timeline from 00 to 02:00f, you will see a map that fades from 0% to 100%.
Next, go to the timeline window, move the mouse or cursor over the key of the tag layer until the black line with left and right arrows appears.
In this case, I stopped dragging until 01:00f, which means that the tag image will be displayed from 01:00f.

Next, make sure to move the red vertical key line to 01:00f where you want the signal to start dying.
Repeat the same process in Steps 8 and 9 as you did for the empty spaces for the image symbols on the map. The only difference is that each level key starts on a different timeline to appear at different times.
Here is a screenshot of the timeline window as it looks after setting the key and timeline for all levels.

If you like what you’ve done, save the Photoshop file in .PSD format, then export it in .GIF format.
The .PSD format is a raw working file that can be edited and modified later, while the .GIF format is an animated GIF file that can be uploaded to the social media of your choice.
To export as an animated GIF, go to the top menu and click “File”, scroll down to click “Export” and in the expanded list of options, click “Save for web (Legacy).”
Then scroll down and click the “Save” button. Save to a folder of your choice.
