All the magic of animation in Photoshop is done through the timeline. If you’re familiar with the basics of video and animation, you’ll know that a timeline is simply a description of how different visual elements appear and change in a scene over time. You can find the timeline by clicking on the window menu and the timeline option.
There’s a video timeline that’s perfect for smoother and more dynamic action and more complex scenes. Then there’s a frame animation timeline that works like a slideshow, allowing you to create multiple frames and stitch them together. Using the Frame Animation Timeline is a bit easier, so that’s what we’ll be looking at today.
Working with frame animations is very easy. When you first create a frame animation, it starts with a single frame that contains everything visible in your Photoshop project.

If you create a second frame, it will also contain everything visible in the project. But each frame can be changed and edited separately.
Let’s say you have a line of text where the first frame of your timeline is “I love”. Then you create a second frame and reverse the text. When you play the animation, you see the text first, then you see it backwards, and then backwards.
Here you can see a 2-frame animation with each letter slightly rotated. It’s easy to do and creates an effective animation!
And the number of pictures you can take is unlimited! By combining multiple frames with simple image manipulations, you can create fun and simple animations perfect for websites, ads, or video title cards. You can also set the duration of each frame in Photoshop for even more control over the speed and feel of the animation.

Move and transform tools should be your primary animation tools. You can scale objects, rotate objects, or move objects across the canvas to get different effects. In our example, we rotated each letter a bit over a few frames, rotated the star icons a bit over a few frames, and moved the rocket icon a bit across the frames to make it look like it’s flying around the corner. from the canvas.
These tools make it easy to create animations using basic elements like text, shapes, and icons. It helps to adjust each element individually, so you’ll want to make sure each part is on a separate layer.
In our example, we have an image of letter tiles. So we need to cut out the tiles from their background.
Then place each letter on a separate layer. This allowed us to adjust each element individually to create a more stylized animation.

After all the frames are set, it’s time to export the animation. There are several ways to do this, depending on what type of file you want to display and where. If it’s on a website, a GIF is the way to go. Go to File, Export, Save for Web (deprecated) and select GIF from the drop-down menu at the top right of the dialog.
If you want to use it as a title card in a video or upload it to a platform like YouTube, you’ll want to save it as an MP4. To do this, go to the “File”, “Export”, “Send Video” section and adjust the settings to your liking and select MP4.
