Techniques For Painting Lifelike Animals In Photoshop With Detail – I drew one of my favorite animals, a wolf! In this tutorial I will show you step by step the process and my thought process for drawing a realistic digital portrait of a wolf using Adobe Photoshop.
This is not the first time I have painted a wolf. In the past I have often felt like I wanted to draw or paint and then I did it.

I painted this wolf study over the weekend. This is a painting study based on a photo with some background information for practice
How To Paint Realistic Scales Digitally
I colored it using Adobe Photoshop, but you should be able to color a study like this in software like Procreate for iPad Pro.
I don’t know the original source of the image I took the photo from, but I believe it was saved from Pinterest.
I kept a warm gray background and focused on the shadow areas first while leaving the light areas for last. I don’t always work like this, but for this image and given the lighting conditions on the Wolf, it seemed like the best option.
At this stage I realize I’ve messed my head up a bit, but I decide to stick with it as I like it from the start. I paint in Photoshop with a rough, rounded brush with the same brush as a light brush and sometimes with a soft brush on the outer layer of skin.

I continue to paint with a hard round brush set to pen pressure and erase lightly with a soft brush set to transparency/pen pressure.
Top Image: Step 4 The next step is to start painting the lighter areas of the animal
Look for reflected or reflected light from objects in the scene, which will cause some color to reflect in areas near the object. In this case, a cool, reflective light comes from the right side and face of the wolf
One Point Perspective
Top image: Step 6. I continue to paint the details of the light parts of the animal and the warm, shaded areas
Top image: Step 7. I add details to the eyes, highlight the warm light source under the wolf, and paint the wolf’s whiskers in a thin line.
Top image: Step 8. I add some additional background elements, such as burning embers that I imagine are coming from the fire.
Finally, create a new adjustment layer and slightly increase the intensity of the light by moving the selection bar. This gives the image a little more pitch and contrast
