Let’s see how Field Guided Editing works and works… Let’s go step by step and learn what we need to know during different steps…
Advanced Techniques For Creating Depth Of Field Effects In Photoshop
1. Open a photo in the Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor and go to the Guided Editing panel. (Check out the image below to see what your workspace looks like…)
2 Minute Photoshop
2. Adobe Photoshop Elements has various sections under the Guided Editing panel. Select ‘Lens Effect’ and click on ‘Depth of Field’. The image shown below shows the updated panel after clicking Depth of Field Guide Editing.
3. In depth of field guide editing, there are two different options to navigate. In this article we will explore the first and simplest one :). The names of these two effects are – SIMPLE and CUSTOM (can you guess what these are?). For me, the first one is simple and basic, the second one should be exciting :). Let’s see if I write it right or wrong. So simple, click on the first option and continue. This should open the following screen on the right side of Adobe Photoshop Elements – Editor.
4. Click ‘Add Blur’, this will give a foggy effect at first, but don’t worry. It gradually moves towards what you expect from it. So the first step is to add blur to your photo as you can see in the following image.
5. This is the most important step and we have to be very careful to approach the best results. There is a gradient marker and we need to identify an area to focus on. For the first time, it is difficult to guess the effect it will give, but try to refine it gradually. As a little tip, mark the area towards the center of the main subject and it will automatically take care of the surrounding areas. Sometimes, this requires repeated measurements. So give it a try and make the best of it.
Mastering Complex Edits With Advanced Photoshop Selection Techniques
6. Here’s how it looks and you can intensify the blur effect with the slider shown in step-3. I’m a bit of a blur and I’m glad it’s showing up now.
7. When you’re done with this selective blur effect in Adobe Photoshop Elements, click Done to exit this workflow. We clicked the drop-down menu below the image and selected Front-Back for a horizontal view.
It will show the original photo and the final result. Hope you are happy with the results. Sometimes, it doesn’t work well with a subject with uniform patterns, which is a regular thing. We’ll discuss another trick for handling such subjects shortly, with custom depth-of-field effects.
The final result was achieved with a simple depth of field guide in Adobe Photoshop Elements. The next article will cover the individual depth of field technique to cover all types of subject matter formats.

Gaussian blur is a widely used filter in Photoshop that helps photographers and graphic designers achieve various visual effects. It is very useful for reducing noise, simulating depth of field and smoothing out imperfections in the image. By using a Gaussian function, this filter creates a smooth, natural-looking fog that looks like it was photographed on a transparent screen.
Photoshop offers several blur filters to change the look of an image, among which Gaussian Fog stands out for its versatility and ease of use. With an easy-to-use interface and customizable settings, beginners and experts alike can take advantage of this powerful tool to improve their work.
Photoshop offers a variety of blur filters that help you achieve different visual effects on your images. In this section, we will briefly discuss the most common types and their purposes.
How To Change The Focus Of A Photo In Photoshop, Use Depth Maps For Depth Of Field Blur
Gaussian Blur Filter: One of the most popular and versatile blur filters in Photoshop is Gaussian Blur. It produces a smooth, natural-looking blur effect by propagating pixel values according to a Gaussian function. It is commonly used to reduce noise, simulate depth of field, and soften imperfections in your images.
Motion Blur: The Motion Blur filter helps simulate the appearance of motion in an image. It uses directional fog to mimic the effect of an object moving faster or the effect of a camera moving while capturing a scene.
Radial Blur: This filter creates a circular or spiral blur effect around a specific point in your image. A radial blur is great for adding a sense of motion or focusing on a specific area, drawing the viewer’s attention to that point.
Lens Blur: The lens blur filter simulates the blur caused by shallow depth of field or out-of-focus areas in photos. This allows you to apply a selective effect, giving you more control over the sharp parts of your image.
51 Most Creative Things You Can Do With Photoshop –
Iris Blur: Part of the Blur Gallery, Iris Blur is designed to create a more natural, gradual blur effect, similar to the depth of field in a photo. It provides an elliptical shape that you can adjust to suit your desired focus area.
Shape Blur and Background Cloud: These filters allow you to apply blur effects to specific shapes or simulate realistic background fog. Shape Blur uses a custom shape for the blur effect, while Background Blur lets you apply bokeh-like effects by selectively blurring certain areas of the image.
Tilt-Shift Blur: Another option from the blur gallery, tilt-shift blur simulates the popular “miniature” effect often seen in architectural photography. By applying selective fog with custom gradient, focus area and saturation, you can create the look of miniature scenes.
In conclusion, understanding and using the various blur filters in Photoshop will greatly improve your photography and design projects. Each filter offers unique effects, and experimenting with them will help you achieve the desired artistic result in your work.
