The tools I have found most useful are a camera phone (helped by various apps), a computer, a drawing tablet, a scanner and an inkjet printer. Of course, you can also use other printers, and each type has its pros and cons, depending on what you are trying to do. I will discuss each of these tools separately. I use my camera phone to capture inspiration when I’m out and about. I know it should be more directly from my inspiration, but the speed and ease of taking photos means I can capture ideas and images quickly and easily as I go about my daily life. There are also tons of apps you can use with the camera. One of my favorites right now is Adobe Capture – I love how it lets you capture color palettes from nature or transform your existing images into kaleidoscopic shapes.
Anyone who has explored this blog will know that I love my scanner art. I use it to create digital papers, wrapping paper, doodle sheets and artwork in general, both with the kids and for myself. It’s very simple to do, and whether you’re scanning plant material or different objects, the results can be surprisingly effective. I also scan my own papers and hand-painted images to create a resource library of material that can be used and adapted as needed, whether printed for collage use or simply used digitally. I like the way I can change the color at will, as it ultimately saves me the time of creating new documents unnecessarily.
After scanning my material or downloading the images from my phone, I can use the computer to manipulate more (of course, you can do some of this directly on the phone if you want, but I like the big screen) . Use Photoshop for this, but any image processing software will give you some tools to help you create your artwork. I like that at this stage I can take some of my pre-scanned artwork or downloaded images and make very simple changes, like change the shadow or lighten the color or cut out the details etc. For example, in painting, I often find that I will like the details of the work I have done more than the whole, and the favorite extended detail will become the basis of more works of art. Playing with shades and changing compositions also sparks new ideas.

For those of us who are older (like myself) it’s important not to be afraid to use digital media for artwork – after all it’s just another set of tools to explore, and if artists like ‘and David Hockney can embrace digital art, then there really is. no excuse for the rest of us! I’ve met art teachers who don’t want to use digital techniques in the classroom, but personally I think that’s a mistake. My son tells me that now there are virtual reality games that allow you to paint and create directly in a 3D digital environment, so the opportunities are only growing, and I don’t see why any art educator would want to limit creativity of his students.
