The design that we will create in this tutorial was inspired by the style of a beautiful card with large letters. We’ll use Adobe Illustrator to create a 3D font style, then import the design into Adobe Photoshop to replicate the graphic effect on each letter. Adding some photo filters and textures will give your digital creation the beauty of a regular print.

To familiarize yourself with this design style, Google “postcard greetings” to see hundreds of examples from across the United States. You will notice that the effect of large letters is common throughout, often with dark and dark colors at different angles.
We’ll start in Adobe Illustrator where we’ll create a basic text layout. Create a new document and name the selected location using the Type Tool. Choose a bold and bold font. I use Futura Condensed Extra Bold with the tracking reduced to -50.

Enter the Halftone Color and Average Radius settings of 5 pixels, then 45 in each corner of the screen.
Change the blending mode of these shapes to Burn Color to allow the halftone effect to interact with the light shapes below, then reduce the opacity to about 30%.

Switch to Adobe Photoshop to start preparing the main design for the postcard. Check out free photo websites like Unsplash and Peckles to find a range of photos that are relevant to the area of your chosen location. Open one of them in Photoshop and change the layer to Smart Object.
Oil paint. Change the style to 1.5 with some settings rated at 10. This filter quickly gives the image a paint effect to mimic the hand-drawn nature of real postcards.

Switch to Photo Paper, then copy and paste onto the postcard design. Adjust the image size, then drag the image below the card text in the Layers panel.
Change the Blending Mode of the postcard line to Fold so that the tones and textures of the image appear on the base image.
Select the image layer and reduce its size to about 70% to create a washed out effect that mimics an old eyebrow print.
Use the marquee tool to draw a rectangular selection in the card text, then add a mask to reduce the size of the image.

Switch to Painter and copy the text drawing function. Paste it as a pixel in the Photoshop drawing, making sure it’s below the card text in the Layers view.
The right color. Adjust the Brightness to 10, Color Strength to 100 and Fade to 0, then set the Source Option to the name of the current document, then the Merge to Layer option. This setting will change the light colors of the artwork to match the colors of the wallpaper so that the lighting system goes well with this kitchen theme.
Select the Magic Wand Tool and select the face of the first letter. Create a new layer and fill the selection with black using the shortcut ALT+Backspace.
Use the magic wand to select the front of the letter and fill that selection to a new line. Continue to process each letter of the place name to create a series of steps for one letter.

Switch to an image document in Photoshop and double-click the Smart Object thumbnail to edit its contents. Paste a backup image from your collection. Save and close the PSB file to see the smart filters applied to this new image.
Press CMD+T to convert, then scale and position the image to display the interesting part of the content in the font.
Open the following image from your collection and paste it into the Mobile Objects of Image Document to apply the paint effect filters. Copy the updated image into the card stock and place it above the next layer. Apply the mask and make the image suitable.
Repeat the image manipulation and cropping steps in the letter layers for each individual letter layer.

Change the Blending Mode of the Noise layer to Overlay and then to Blending to soften the grain effect.
The final design is a great homage to traditional postcard design. 3D graphics tools help to simulate the texture of the original design, while photoshop and text editing help to give the painting an aged and distressed look to achieve a nostalgic look.
