How To Create Animated Graphics In Photoshop For Engaging Content – There are many tools you can use to create GIF animations these days. I find creating GIF animations in Photoshop more useful because I can save the source file and edit it at any time. It is also the most versatile tool to date.

That said, there is a certain learning curve to using Photoshop. It can take you hours or days to create a single GIF. Hold on tight as I show you how to do this step by step in less than 10 minutes.

A static image works well, but an animated GIF will be more engaging and shouldn’t take too long to create.

Create A Gif In Photoshop

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to combine text, logos, graphics, and images using Photoshop CC with your MacBook Pro.

For this campaign, I want to promote a virtual event on social media. I call this event “Near Asia Marketing Summit”. This is not a real event, I just made it for the purpose of this guide.

Before transferring the images, graphics and text on the banner, these elements must be designed first.

Top Tip: When you get a graphic, be sure to look for vectors with individual parts on separate layers that aren’t set to any background.

I go to FreePik to search for graphics related to this event. Below is the background graphic I want to add to the banner.

If you have a lot of images ready to create a GIF animation, you can skip the above and upload images in bulk with these steps:

Select the desired background graphic. Then go to the top menu, click “Edit” and click “Copy”.

Go back to your Photoshop file or document and press “Command” and “V” on your keyboard at the same time to paste the graphic.

For this project, I add the event logo, location, date, and call to action to the file.

Just be sure to add them to separate Photoshop layers to allow each layer to animate or move at different times. Continue designing your banner with all graphics, text and images appearing in the Photoshop file.

Creating Animated Gifs In Photoshop

Next, it’s time to label or name each layer so you can clearly identify them as you create your GIF animation. To label the name, go to the series panel, which can be found by clicking on “Windows” in the top menu. Then scroll down and click the “Layers” button.

When the Layers panel opens, double-click the first layer with the words. They will be highlighted and at this point you can rename the layer. Do the same for the other layers.

Before animating the layers, click on “Window” in the top menu, scroll down and click on “Timeline”.

Next, click the small arrow pointing down inside the Timeline window. Then select “Create Animation Frame” in the drop-down menu.

Go to the small menu marked with 3 lines in the corner of the Timeline panel, which looks like this:

Click on the three lines and select “Create a new layer for each new frame” in the drop-down menu.

Next, go to the bottom left of the Timeline panel and click the “Convert to video timeline” icon. It looks like this:

After you click the icon, it should appear in your Timeline panel. On the left you will see all your layers

Create Your 1st Animated Gif In Adobe Photoshop

At this point, all the lines will appear simultaneously, and if you click the “play” button, you won’t see any animation going on.

The next thing to do is show only the first graph you want to see and hide the rest first.

Do this by clicking the “eye” icon next to the layers you want to hide in the Layers panel.

In this case, the only layers that should be visible at the start of the animation are the map and the background, so uncheck “eye” for all layers except the map and background layer.

Now all you need to see is the map image and the light yellow background layer.

Next, click the small arrow on the Timeline image layer to zoom in on the map image. A drop-down menu will appear with three main frame functions: position, opacity, and style.

For this GIF animation, I want the map image to be invisible at the start and slowly fade to become visible. So I have to use the ‘Transparency’ feature.

Next, make sure the vertical red line in the Timeline window is drawn to the “00” part of the keyframe. This tells the program that you want this first effect to start at the beginning of the GIF animation.

Next, click on the clock icon next to the word “Transparency”. You will now see a yellow diamond icon appear to the left of the clock icon, except for the chart of the map series.

Next, go to the layers panel, select only the “Map” image layer and set the opacity to 0%.

Return to the Timeline window, move the red vertical line to the time you want to display the map image. In this case, I moved the schedule to 02:00 AM.

Next, click on the diamond icon on the left. When the icon is clicked, a diamond icon appears in the main time frame. This is to show that the first opacity effect you added before will disappear when you move the red vertical line to it.

Next, click the diamond icon that sits along the same line as the vertical red line in the Timeline window to select the image in that keyframe. You will see it is selected when it changes color to yellow.

Now, if you slide the vertical red line in the Timeline from 00 to 14:00, you’ll see the map fade from 0% to 100%.

Next, go to the Timeline window, move the mouse or cursor over the keyframe of the tagline layer until the black symbol with the bracket and left and right arrows appears.

In this case, I stopped shooting it until 1:00 PM, which means the tagline image will start showing from 1:00 PM.

Then make sure to move the red vertical keyframe line to 01:00 where you want the label line to start phasing.

Repeat the same process in steps 8 and 9 as you did with the opacity for the map image and label line. The only difference is that different levels of keyframes will start on different timelines to show at different times.

If you’re happy with what you’ve done, save your Photoshop file in .PSD format, then export it as a .GIF format.

The .PSD format is a raw working file that you can later edit and modify, while the .GIF format is an animated GIF file that can be used to upload to your social media of choice.

To export as a GIF animation, go to the top menu and click “File,” scroll down to click “Export,” and click “Save for Web (Legacy)” in the expanded menu list.

Then, scroll down and click “Save”. Save it in a folder of your choice.
