How To: Design Your Own Typeface

Open Photoshop and create a new 6″ x 9″ document as shown. Set the resolution to 300 pixels per inch and set the color mode to RGB. You can take this opportunity to name our file ‘mrs-fox-in-the-garden’ or use a similar name before checking your ‘Backgrounds’ as black.

After entering the correct settings for your new document, click the ‘Create’ button or press the Enter key on your keyboard. Double-click the Background layer to open it and when you hear the ‘New Layer’ dialog box, rename the layer to ‘Background’ as shown in the image below.

After converting your layer to a Smart Object, You should notice a small side icon with a folded corner on the layer.

Now we open the ‘©KD-MarkerSquare-Color_11.png’ file from the freebie pack and you should immediately notice that there is no background on the outer edges of the image.

Before double-clicking the layer to rename it. We need to drag the file into our main document and do the same thing we did in the second step. From here, We’ll hold down the control button again, Click on the layer and select ‘Convert to Smart Object’, You will see the same small icon next to the layer indicating that the layer has been converted into a smart object. . From here, We will change the Blending Mode of the Marker Texture layer to ‘Screen’ as shown below.

Make sure your top layer is selected; This should be the markup form from the previous step. From here, Click the little black and white circle icon at the bottom of your layer to bring up the adjustment layer menu. Once the menu appears, select the highest option ‘Solid Color’ as shown in the image:

When you select a color in the dialog box, Enter the hex value of #F37021 as shown below:

Press the Enter key to apply the changes and you should now have an orange solid fill at the top of your layers palette. The next thing we want to do is change the Blending Mode of this adjustment layer from ‘Normal’ to ‘Linear Light’ as shown here.

Drag the file into your Photoshop document and rename the layer by double-clicking on it. I’ve decided to go with the filename ‘Small_Dot_Pattern’ as shown below:

Select the ‘Small_Dot_Pattern’ layer and press Command/Ctrl+J to duplicate it. Hold down the Shift key and drag the copy below the original. Repeat this process so that the original and the two copies are stacked on top of each other. The idea here is to make a copy and move it down to create a seamless dot pattern.

Select the top dot pattern layer, Hold down the Shift key and select the third layer to select all three copies at once. With all three layers highlighted in your Layers palette, Press Command/Ctrl+E on your keyboard to merge all three copies into one layer.

Select a new merged copy of the point shape and continue copying and holding down the Shift key until the entire canvas is filled with the point shape. Once you’ve filled the document with seamless dots, hold down the Shift key. Select all the dot pattern layers again and merge them all into one layer by pressing Command/Ctrl+E on the keyboard. Then hold down the Control key and click on the attachment point style layer and select ‘Convert to Smart Object’ from the drop-down menu as shown below.

After converting your smooth shape into a Smart Object, Press Command/Ctrl+T to start Free Transform. To scale the shape, hold down Alt/Option+Shift and drag outward from the four corners of the border. Move your cursor over any of the squares and then rotate the shape:

Now that we have expanded our shape and rotated the points, Lower the Opacity of the layer to about 20% by dragging the Opacity slider to the left or by pressing the number ‘2’ on the keyboard.

Double-click the Point Smart Object layer to bring up the Layer Styles dialog box. Check the ‘Color Overlay’ option from here.

Click ‘OK’ or press the Enter key to apply the changes. Your image should now look like this:

Select the topmost layer in your Layers palette – it should be the Dot Pattern layer. Then hold the Shift key and select the bottom layer, which should be the ‘Background’ layer. Now you should have all the layers selected together:

Once you’ve selected your layers, Click the little folder icon at the bottom of the Layers palette; Or you can use the keyboard shortcut Command/Ctrl+G to add all your layers as a group folder. Then, Rename this entire folder to ‘Background’ as shown in the image below.

Drag the frame into your document and rename the layer to ‘Olive-Grass Frame’ or feel free to use a name that suits you. Then you need to hold down the control key and click on the layer to convert it to a smart object as shown here:

Click and drag the frame image to the top right of your document so that only its left side looks like this:

Select your frame smart object layer and press Command/Ctrl+J to duplicate it. Select the copy and drag it below the original layer. Then hold down the Shift key and slide the frame down so that the entire right side of the image is displayed on the right side of the frame. for a change Press Command/Ctrl+T to launch Free Transform; Then click the object while holding the Control key. Doing so will display a drop-down menu where you can select the ‘Flip Get’ option.

Place two copies of the frame on top of each other; Your image should now look like this:

Move the two new copies below the first two into your Layers palette. From there, hold the Shift key and move both copies from the right side of the image to the left until the flower border comes out on the opposite side.

Make another copy of the frame by pressing Command/Ctrl+J; This time it’s moved to the lower right corner so that the top of the frame is only visible at the bottom edge of the document.

Make another copy of this layer; Hold the Shift key and slide to the left until the bottom flower is full. To add more varieties here; Press Command/Ctrl+T to start the free transformation; Then Control-click the image and select ‘Flip Vertical’ before pressing ‘Enter’ to apply the changes.

Repeat these last steps to do the same for the top of the image; So you now have two frames on each side. Once you are satisfied with the placement of your flowers, Select the top layer; Hold down the Shift key and select the bottom border layer, so select them all at once.

From here, You can put them back into a group folder by pressing Command/Ctrl+G or by clicking the little folder icon at the bottom of the Layers palette. Once you’ve placed them in a folder, double-click the folder in the Layers palette to rename it.
