How To Paint Realistic Fur And Hair In Photoshop For Character Designs

As you know, there are several basic shading techniques in painting and drawing, and I like this one as the most suitable for me – I think it is one of the most rational by painting the coat – to start coloring with a local color of ‘ neutral half tone, then shade it according to volume and light. Usually this underpainting should be darker than the fur, since it is in the shade. Then add the layers above to add fur. All brushes have less color and light jitter to make the fur more realistic.

How To Paint An Elven Maiden

• So, first try to lay a basic shadow with a simple brush that you prefer to paint, hard or soft, then layer the strands of fur on top, depending on the shape and the light.

• After that, it may be necessary to make some areas deeper (darker) – for example, deeply shaded areas among lines near their roots – or add a few light accents and highlight in the lights.

• You can also experiment with layer and brush blending modes, such as Soft Light, Screen, Multiply, etc.

• As in painting or drawing in general, I recommend going from regular main shapes to partial shapes and details: first specify the main volume, base volume, light and dark colors, then add lines of -fur that is not detailed with matching brushes, then do the details with detailed fur brushes.

• Finally, I add some of the sharpest lines or hairs, maybe blur or darken some of the branches below and lighten some of the more visible, highlighted ones. Try to make something softer or stronger, darker or lighter in the finish or work, a kind of post-processing. Add some highlights. And any regular thin brush, like a round one, is OK to pull the parted hair.

• Brushes # 2, 3 and 8 have two options for left and right hair growth direction.
