Open the paint overlay in the Layers panel. (Always work with duplicate overlays so you don’t accidentally overwrite the original.)

In the Options menu at the bottom of the Layers Panel, click the Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon. Choose a gradient fill. Click OK, then click OK again to close the gradient fill.

Cycle through the blending modes to see which blending modes work best. Overlays, screens and hard lights usually work best, but it depends on the colors and overlays you use.

Here we will look at Photoshop’s default pastel color palette. We will also learn how to create pastel colors using the color picker tool. You will find strong pastel color codes useful. Finally, we will create a pastel palette with Adobe Color.

There are two ways to open the default color library in Photoshop. Let’s start with the Color Picker tool, click on the foreground color and select Color Libraries.

The second way to open the Color Library is to go to Window > Swatch and then click the icon in the upper right corner of the Swatches panel.

The main difference between these two methods is that when you open the color library in the swatch panel, it automatically includes all the colors as swatches. If you open the color library in the color picker, it shows you the color in the right column and different variations of the selected color in the left column. You will find a variety of pastel colors. 

Let’s create our own pastel color code. Open the ANPA color library with lots of pastel colors. As you can see, the first four strong pastel colors from this library have good low saturation with value settings and can be useful for creating your own pastel colors. You can even find white pastel colors that can be used. 

To add a new swatch, you should select the color change you want, then click the Picker and select Add to Swatches. Now we can enter the desired color in the swatch panel. 

Let’s add four more colors using the same method. I chose purple, turquoise, green and yellow. As you can see, it’s easy to create your own preset Photoshop color schemes using the ANPA Color Library.

Imagine all the pastel colors you can make from now on. You can even try creating a white pastel color for yourself. 

Let’s create a Photoshop pastel gradient color scheme using the color picker and the sunset image. This will give us the pastel color palette. You can work with other pastel colored pictures. 

Open your image in pastel colors. Open the Color Picker tool, and select consecutive colors and add them to the swatch.

I chose the principle of square harmony for Photoshop’s pastel color palette. To get a pastel color Photoshop preset, you need to keep the points near the center of the circle. 

Make sure that the Saturation setting of each color is between 20-40% and the Value setting is between 80-100%.

Once you find a color you like, you can save it to your Creative Cloud library. Just select an existing library (or create a new one) and click Save.
