Creating Original Fantasy Creatures Using Digital Painting In Photoshop – Turn your ideas into fully realized 3D illustrations with these workflow tips and tricks by industry VFX artist, Bakak Bina. With more than a decade of experience working on film and TV, including Avengers Infinity War, Guardians of the Galaxy and Game of Thrones, Babak’s workshops provide insight into workflow and industry techniques to help you create your own fictional characters and creatures — from sketch. To render the end.
The 5-hour workshop begins with a sketch — in this case, a concept based on silkworm macro photography. The drawing is taken as a rough idea for the 3D model in ZBrush, where all further design decisions are made. Bakak reveals some of his favorite ZBrush tools that help him segment models and maximize efficiency, and he discusses his decision-making and design choices throughout the process.

Along with the full ZBrush model, Babak shares ZBrush PolyPainting techniques and the process of exporting maps for further texture work in the industry’s favorite 3D drawing tool, Mari. He discusses other maps needed for filming and how they are generated and features additional filming possibilities.
The Best Of Fantasy Art
In the final step of the 3D creature creation pipeline, Babak brings the painted creature to life to provide an effective lighting environment. He shares his V-Ray shader range and discusses the power of RGB masks, and reveals how lighting can dramatically expand the sculpting of a 3D model. He also shares a simple fur workflow before presenting the final result using V-Ray for Maya.
The videos in this workshop have been paced to cover a large amount of material with the goal of sharing industry-preferred workflows, methods, and techniques for creating 3D creatures. However, this workshop is suitable for anyone – at any skill level – to explore new ideas and see the complete creation of a 3D creature from start to finish.
