Tips For Developing Your Personal Style In Digital Painting Using Photoshop

Tips For Developing Your Personal Style In Digital Painting Using Photoshop – Digital design is really busy. You can do anything and do it any way, but what if you want your digital images to look like traditional works of art? In this video, Court Jones of Proko shares seven exercises and techniques she uses to create digital paintings that mimic the look of oil on canvas.

Follow the same steps and processes digitally as when working with real paint on canvas. When working with oil paints, I paint the entire canvas with a neutral or warm color. Then, I make a quick line mark before adding a local color gradient to block out a larger pattern or create contrast with colors I’ll use later in the painting. Making pieces look like digital art creates textures or color variations that are more illusory than would otherwise be the case.

Tips For Developing Your Personal Style In Digital Painting Using Photoshop

One of the things that helps make a digital painting look like it was made with real materials is the canvas or paper size. And it’s really easy to replicate that in a program like Photoshop. But you can and should learn to create and edit your own images so you can control them more effectively. For a quick tutorial on how I created a full line brush, check out the video.

One caveat: if you use the same shape for every brush in every area, it can be edited the same way and repeated. So experiment with different brushes and styles in the same design.

Ideally, draw in one line or as few sections as possible. On a real canvas, you have a physical layer to paint on. Many aspects of digital design are safety nets. It can prevent some artists from being careful and showing their work while snoring. When you do all or most of your drawings in a single line, you will think and problem solve much like a traditional painter. And when you work hard as a traditional designer, your designs tend to resemble traditional materials.

Digital painting allows for special effects, but they may appear artificial. Then I start painting on the right again, using different layers. From start to finish, I avoid selections, fills, gradients, multiple layers, or automatic operations. When problems are solved with a brush stroke that shows and chooses the right colors, it has a traditional look. Also, when you make a mistake, try not to use the “Undo” command. Just paint it over.

When looking at the subject or photo display, first select the color temperature of the light. So choose a minimal set of colors first and put them in your palette before starting. Set all the lights, transitions and shadows.

Make Digital Art

When working digitally, you can apply dabs of palette colors directly to the canvas you’re working on. Save it to the side and as you draw, use the eyedropper tool to select a color from the palette when needed. You can lighten or darken the color palette, but try not to add new colors as you go. And, above all, do not reveal the colors of the photos. The more you involve your brain in this process, the better you will be at choosing colors more deeply.

The further away you are from drawing while you work, the more interesting and creative your work will be. When designing digitally, keep your work as organized as possible. Try to keep the whole image while doing this. If you play in a very small area, you will try to work too much on the details, increasing the possibility of sacrificing the unity of the composition.

Angle manipulation is one of the most overlooked and underused techniques in painting. And it’s probably one of the most important characteristics of an artist, besides color, that sets you apart from other artists. You will get different angles by drawing backgrounds and drawing line art, pushing, dragging and digital painting. Real oil and acrylic paint mixed together, the colors complement each other and cross each other. The more features you add to your digital workflow, the more visible your work will be.

To soften and blend the edges, look for broken edges or the contours of the feet and use touch-ups. Use a blending tool. And don’t forget, because of the obvious contrast, that if you want a realistic look there must be many strong sides of the drawing in the same drawing. As a general rule, the best time to simplify or even lose an edge is when two adjacent values are very similar.

So you may have seen a pattern. A recurring theme here is the attempt to emulate the process of traditional artists and the reduction of digital tools to better reflect the limitations of traditional tools. If you do this, your digital work will be more about you and your skills, than the software.
